Why Retraining Doesn't Reset the Loop

A natural response to a compounding bias problem is: "just retrain the system on fresh data." That helps, but it's not a clean reset. If the new data was generated while the biased system was still running, the loop's fingerprints are already baked into it — retraining on that data can just re-teach the same pattern instead of correcting it.
Breaking a feedback loop actually requires noticing it's there in the first place — comparing outcomes across groups over time, not just checking overall accuracy — and then deliberately intervening: adjusting how outcomes are weighted, bringing in data from outside the loop, or changing what the system optimizes for. None of that happens automatically just because a retrain occurred.
This is the throughline of this whole level: bias isn't one bad batch of data waiting to be swapped out. It comes from history embedded in data, judgment calls made while labeling it, and loops that quietly reinforce themselves once a system is live. Fixing any one of those doesn't automatically fix the others.
Why doesn't simply retraining a system on newer data automatically undo a feedback loop?
Breaking a feedback loop requires deliberately comparing ____ across groups over time, not just checking overall accuracy.
Bias in AI systems generally traces back to a single cause that, once fixed, resolves the whole problem.

What defines a feedback loop in an AI system?
A feedback loop requires someone to deliberately choose to make a system more biased.
In a feedback loop, a system's earlier output can shape real-world ____ that later becomes its own training data.
Why does a small initial skew in a feedback loop matter over time?
Individual nudges within a feedback loop usually look alarming even in a single snapshot of the data.
A feedback loop turns a small skew into a measurable gap by repeating the same nudge across many ____.
Why doesn't simply retraining on newer data automatically undo a feedback loop?
Breaking a feedback loop requires deliberately comparing ____ across groups over time, not just overall accuracy.
Bias generally traces back to one single cause that, once fixed, resolves the whole problem.
What is the throughline connecting historical data, labeling, and feedback loops as sources of bias?
