Why Depth Actually Helps

Each layer in a network takes the previous layer's output and transforms it further, so stacking more layers lets the network build increasingly abstract representations, each one based on the last. That stacking is literally where "deep" in deep learning comes from — depth means layers, and more of them.
A classic way to picture this, using image recognition: early layers tend to pick up on very simple patterns, like edges and basic textures. Middle layers combine those into slightly more complex shapes. Later layers combine those shapes into recognizable parts, and the final layers combine those parts into whole, recognizable objects. No single layer does the whole job — each one adds one more level of abstraction on top of the last.
This is also exactly why depth isn't automatically better without limit. More layers mean more capacity to represent complex patterns, but also more weights to train, more compute required, and real practical difficulties in training very deep networks well — depth is powerful, not free.
In the classic image-recognition picture, what do early layers typically pick up on?
Stacking layers so each one builds on the previous layer's output is literally where the word "____" in deep learning comes from.
Adding more layers to a network has no real cost or downside at all.

What best explains deep learning's rise in recent years?
GPUs were originally built for rendering video game graphics, not specifically for AI.
Deep learning still depends heavily on large amounts of ____ and significant compute power.
What does this track add on top of the neural network basics already covered elsewhere?
Every neural network architecture works equally well for every kind of task.
The specific arrangement of a neural network's layers and connections is called its ____.
In the classic image-recognition example, what do later layers typically build toward?
Adding more layers to a network is always free, with no real cost or downside.
The word "deep" in deep learning literally refers to the number of stacked ____ in a network.
