Prompt engineering is the practice of deliberately designing, testing, and refining instructions so an AI tool reliably produces the output you actually want — not just once, but consistently, across many different situations. It's a real, learnable skill, not a collection of secret phrases.
Casual prompting is asking a question once and taking whatever comes back. Prompt engineering is different: it treats a prompt like something you build and improve on purpose, the same way you'd refine a recipe until it works every time, not just the one time you got lucky.
This matters most once you're reusing a prompt — a template you'll use repeatedly, or a prompt that needs to work well no matter what specific input someone gives it. A prompt that happens to work great for one example but falls apart on a slightly different input isn't actually a good prompt yet, it's a lucky first draft.
What best distinguishes prompt engineering from just asking an AI tool a question?
A prompt that works great on one example but falls apart on a slightly different input is best described as a lucky ____, not a finished, reliable prompt.
Prompt engineering is mainly about memorizing special phrases that unlock better AI responses.
