Free vs. Paid AI Tools

Most popular AI tools offer a free tier alongside a paid one. The free tier is typically a real, usable product — not a crippled demo — but it usually differs from the paid version in a few specific ways worth knowing before you decide whether to pay for anything.
The most common differences are: which underlying model you get access to (paid tiers often unlock a more capable version), how many messages or generations you can do before hitting a limit, how fast responses come back during busy periods, and access to newer features before they're rolled out more widely. Notice that price mostly buys capability and convenience, not a fundamentally different kind of tool.
That means the right question isn't "should I pay for AI tools?" in the abstract — it's "does the free tier already do what I actually need?" For a lot of everyday, casual use, it genuinely does. Paying starts to make sense once a usage limit gets in the way of something you do regularly, or once a specific capability only exists on the paid tier and you actually need it.
What typically differs between a free and paid tier of the same AI tool?
The right question before paying for an AI tool is usually not "should I pay?" but whether the ____ already covers what you actually need.
A free tier of a popular AI tool is usually a crippled, unusable demo rather than a genuinely functional product.
