Giving It a Role and a Format · Lesson 5 of 9

Specifying the Output Format

A free lesson from Swipe AI · Using AI Tools Well, level 2 · updated October 2026

By the Swipe team, founded by Colin · how we make lessons

If you don't say what shape you want the answer in, an AI tool defaults to whatever it guesses is typical — usually a few paragraphs of prose. Naming the exact format you want — a numbered list, a table, a single paragraph under 50 words — turns a guess into an instruction.

Useful format instructions include: "as a numbered list," "as a table with columns for X and Y," "in exactly 3 bullet points," "under 100 words," or "as a short paragraph followed by 3 action items." The more concrete the shape, the less editing you'll do afterward.

Format and content are separate instructions, and you often need both: "act as a nutrition coach" shapes the voice, "give me a table with a meal, calories, and protein column" shapes the structure. Stack them in the same request instead of picking one.

Unspecified: "Give me some healthy breakfast ideas"
Formatted: "Give me 5 healthy breakfast ideas as a table with
columns for Meal, Prep Time, and Protein (grams)"
Same request, but the second version tells the tool exactly what shape to hand back.
Quick check

Why does specifying an output format (like "as a table" or "in exactly 3 bullet points") help?

Fill in the blank

Without a format instruction, an AI tool defaults to whatever shape it ____ is typical — usually plain paragraphs.

True or false

Specifying a role and specifying an output format are two separate instructions you can combine in the same request.
