The 50/30/20 Rule

The 50/30/20 rule is a simple way to split your after-tax income into three categories: 50% toward needs, 30% toward wants, and 20% toward savings and debt payoff. It doesn't tell you exactly which grocery store to shop at or how many streaming subscriptions to keep — it gives you three big buckets and a target size for each one, so you can check your spending against something concrete instead of guessing.
Needs are the 50% bucket: rent, utilities, groceries, minimum debt payments, essential transportation — the needs from the last level. Wants are the 30% bucket: dining out, hobbies, streaming, anything that makes life nicer but isn't required. Savings and debt payoff make up the last 20%: money set aside for the future or used to pay down more than the minimum on a debt. The percentages are targets to aim for, not rules enforced by anyone but you.
Here's what that looks like with real numbers, on $4,000 of monthly take-home pay.
Needs (50%): $4,000 x 0.50 = $2,000 Wants (30%): $4,000 x 0.30 = $1,200 Savings (20%): $4,000 x 0.20 = $800
Under the 50/30/20 rule, the ____ portion of your income is set aside for savings and paying down extra debt.
Under the 50/30/20 rule, on $3,000 of monthly take-home pay, how much should target go toward wants?
The 50/30/20 rule applies its percentages to gross income before taxes are taken out.
The 50/30/20 split is a starting guideline, not a law of physics — someone with high rent in an expensive city might run needs closer to 60%, and that's fine as long as it's a deliberate choice. What matters more than hitting the exact numbers is knowing which bucket each dollar is falling into, which is exactly the skill the next lesson builds on.
