What Is Money, Really?

Money is any widely accepted good or token that lets people trade value without directly swapping goods for other goods. Before money existed, people relied on barter: trading a good or service directly for another one. Barter breaks down fast — a farmer with extra wheat who needs shoes has to find a shoemaker who happens to want wheat, right now. Money solves that by giving everyone a common thing to trade for, that everyone else will also accept later.
Economists describe money as doing three jobs at once. It's a medium of exchange, something people accept in trade for goods and services. It's a store of value, something that holds its worth so you can save it now and spend it later. And it's a unit of account, a common scale for comparing the value of very different things, like a house versus a cup of coffee.
Money that you save today so you can spend it on something bigger next year is acting as a ____.
Most money today isn't physical at all. Your salary lands as a number in a bank's database, your card payment subtracts a number from that database and adds one to a store's, and a transfer app just moves the number between accounts. Understanding that money is mostly just agreed-upon numbers — not the paper itself — matters later, because it's exactly why things like interest, fees, and inflation can quietly change what those numbers are actually worth.
Why does money solve the core problem with barter?
A major weakness of barter is that both people have to want exactly what the other person is offering, at the same time.
None of this is trivia. Every lesson coming up in this track — budgeting, saving, interest, investing — is really about the same thing: moving this one flexible resource around on purpose instead of by accident. Understanding what money actually does is the foundation everything else in this track builds on.
