Trading volume is simply the number of shares that changed hands over a given period, usually shown for the current trading day. It's a headcount of activity, separate from price entirely — a stock can have a huge volume while barely moving in price, or a tiny volume while swinging wildly.
Volume is usually compared to a stock's average volume — its typical daily amount — rather than judged as a raw number on its own. A large, popular company might normally trade tens of millions of shares a day, while a small company might normally trade only a few thousand.
Today's Volume: 42,300,000 Average Volume: 18,600,000
The number of shares that changed hands over a given period, like a trading day, is called ____.
Unusually high volume often shows up around news, earnings reports, or other events that make a lot of people want to trade at once — it's a sign that something changed. Unusually low volume can mean fewer people are paying attention, which can also mean it's harder to buy or sell quickly without moving the price.
What does trading volume actually measure?
A spike in trading volume well above average often lines up with news or other events affecting the stock.
