What an AI Agent Actually Is · Lesson 2 of 9

Building on the Tool-Use Basics

A free lesson from Swipe AI · AI Agents & Automation, level 1 · updated October 2026

By the Swipe team, founded by Colin · how we make lessons

This isn't a brand-new idea to this app. Building With AI APIs already introduced function calling — a model requesting that your code run a described action and pass the result back — kept fully conceptual, with the request-and-response pattern as the whole focus.

That earlier level covered the mechanical building block: how a single tool request and response actually works. This track goes further, into the decisions surrounding that mechanism — which tool to reach for, when to call it, how to judge whether the result actually moved toward the goal, and what to do next based on that judgment.

Put simply: Building With AI APIs taught what a single tool call looks like. This track teaches what it takes to string many of them together, with real decisions in between, into something that can actually complete a multi-step task on its own.
