What Training Data Actually Is

Training data is the huge collection of examples an AI model learns from before anyone ever gets to use it. For a model that works with text, that's an enormous amount of written material; for an image model, it might be millions of labeled photos; for a speech model, huge amounts of recorded audio. Whatever the task, training data is the raw material the model's patterns get built from.
The word "huge" is doing real work here. Modern models are typically trained on datasets far too large for any one person to read in a lifetime — not a few hundred examples, but collections that would take centuries to read end to end. That scale is exactly what lets a model pick up patterns that are too subtle or too spread out for a small dataset to reveal.
It's easy to picture training data as a single tidy library, but in practice it's usually assembled from many different sources and formats, then cleaned up and organized before training even starts. The quality and variety of that data matters just as much as the sheer amount of it — a point this level comes back to shortly.
What is "training data," in plain terms?
The large collection of examples an AI model learns patterns from before it is ever used is called ____.
Modern AI models are typically trained on datasets small enough for one person to read in an afternoon.
