🤖
If you remember only one factor from this whole level, make it this one. 🎯

Payment history is a record of whether you've paid your bills on time. It tracks every credit card, loan, and other credit account you have, month by month, noting whether each payment showed up on time, late, or not at all. In most scoring models, payment history is generally the single biggest factor in the entire score.

The logic is simple from a lender's point of view: someone who has consistently paid on time in the past is the best available signal that they'll keep doing it in the future. A single late payment usually won't wreck a score, but it can still leave a mark, and the damage generally grows with how late the payment was and how often it's happened.

Fill in the blank

In most scoring models, ____ is generally the single biggest factor behind a credit score.

🤖
Being a little late and being a lot late are treated very differently. ⏱️

Not all lateness is equal. A payment that's a few days late but caught before it's reported can often have no effect at all, since many issuers only report a missed payment once it's 30 days or more overdue. Once a payment crosses that kind of threshold, it typically gets reported, and the longer it stays unpaid, the more it tends to weigh on the score.

Quick check

Why does payment history generally carry the most weight of any credit score factor?

True or false

A payment that's a few days late but paid before it's ever reported can often have no effect on a credit score.

🤖
One late payment isn't the end of the story — a track record is built over time. 🌱

If a late payment does happen, it's not a permanent verdict on your creditworthiness. Its effect tends to fade as time passes and gets outweighed by a longer stretch of on-time payments afterward. The most reliable way to protect this factor is the least exciting one: pay at least the minimum on every account, every single time it's due.
