A credit score is a number, usually between roughly 300 and 850, that summarizes how reliably someone has managed borrowed money in the past. It exists to solve a real problem for lenders: they can't personally know every applicant, so the score gives them a fast, standardized way to estimate the risk of lending to a stranger.
A higher score generally means access to better loan terms: lower interest rates, higher approval odds, and sometimes even lower deposits required for things like renting an apartment or setting up utilities. A lower score doesn't necessarily block access completely, but it usually means paying more for the exact same loan.
Same $20,000 car loan, different scores: Higher credit score → lower interest rate → less paid overall Lower credit score → higher interest rate → more paid overall
