Writing Down When, Not Just What · Lesson 6 of 9

How Time-Blocking Actually Works

A free lesson from Swipe Personal Growth · Focus & Productivity, level 2 · updated October 2026

By the Swipe team, founded by Colin · how we make lessons

Time-blocking itself is simple: look at your actual day, and instead of a flat list of tasks, assign each one a real start time and a rough end time, the same way you'd schedule a meeting. "Write the report" becomes "9:00–10:00, write the report."

To-do list version:
- Write the report
- Reply to emails
- Plan next week

Time-blocked version:
9:00-10:00 Write the report
10:00-10:30 Reply to emails
2:00-2:45 Plan next week
Same three tasks, one version with a moment reserved and one without.

The block doesn't need to be perfectly accurate to work. Even a rough estimate — this will probably take about an hour — beats no estimate at all, because it forces you to actually picture doing the task instead of just naming it. That mental rehearsal alone makes starting easier.

It also makes your day's real capacity visible. A list of ten tasks looks doable right up until you try to fit them into actual hours and discover there are only six free. Time-blocking surfaces that mismatch before the day does, instead of after.
