Would You Actually Say That to a Friend?

Here's a simple, concrete check to run once you've caught the actual sentence your internal narrator used: would you say this exact sentence, word for word, to a friend who came to you with the same situation? Not a gentler paraphrase — the literal sentence, unedited.
For a lot of people, the honest answer is no. A friend who shows up ten minutes late gets "no big deal, traffic happens." The same person, running ten minutes late themselves, gets something closer to "I'm always like this, I can't get anything right." Same fact. Two completely different sentences.
The point isn't to be nicer to yourself for its own sake, and it's not a license to ignore real mistakes. It's a diagnostic: when the sentence you'd never say to a friend is exactly the sentence you say to yourself, that gap is worth noticing — not because the situation was fine, but because the self-talk is running harsher than the situation actually warrants.
What does the friend test actually check?
The friend test asks whether you'd say the exact same ____ to a friend in the same situation.
This lesson claims the friend test is about pretending mistakes didn't happen.
