Common Stacking Mistakes

The most common mistake is reversing the order. The formula is after I [current habit], I will [new habit] — the existing habit has to come first, because it's the one doing the work of triggering the new one. Planning to do the new habit before the anchor puts the new habit in charge of remembering itself, which defeats the entire point of stacking.
Another common mistake is stacking a new habit that doesn't fit in the time the moment actually offers. If the anchor habit takes thirty seconds, the new habit needs to fit inside roughly that same small window, not turn a quick moment into a fifteen-minute production you'll start skipping the first busy morning.
A third mistake is treating one missed day as proof the whole idea failed. A stack not sticking is usually information, not a verdict — maybe the trigger moment wasn't consistent enough, or the new habit was too big for the window. Adjust the pairing and try again rather than abandoning habit stacking altogether.
What's wrong with planning to do a new habit before the anchor habit instead of after it?
If the anchor habit only takes thirty seconds, the new habit should ____ inside roughly that same window.
A stacked habit not sticking on the first try usually means habit stacking as a strategy doesn't work.

What's the problem with planning to do a new habit before the anchor habit instead of after it?
