A stack is only as strong as its specificity. Vague in, vague out. 🎯

The formula only works if both halves are specific. After I pour my morning coffee is a specific moment — it happens at a specific time, in a specific spot, and you'd notice immediately if you skipped it. Sometime in the morning is not a moment at all. It's a whole window of time with no clear trigger, which means you're right back to relying on remembering.

The new habit half needs the same treatment. Write down three things I'm grateful for is something you can actually start and finish in the moment. Be more grateful is a general direction, not an action — there's nothing to physically do right after the coffee finishes pouring. A good stack pairs a specific trigger with a specific, doable action.

Stack one new habit onto an anchor at a time. It's tempting to chain several new habits onto a single reliable moment at once, but each added link is one more chance for the whole chain to break, and if it does, you often lose all of them instead of just one. Get one link solid first, then consider adding a second.

Quick check

Which pair is a well-formed habit stack?

Fill in the blank

A well-formed stack pairs a specific trigger with a specific, ____ action.

True or false

It's generally safer to stack several new habits onto one anchor habit all at once.
